There’s a growing movement to support Canadian businesses.
In recent weeks, “Choose Canada” has become a rallying cry. With U.S. President Donald Trump signing executive orders to impose a 25% tariff on all imported steel and aluminum starting March 12—and discussions underway about further tariffs on other Canadian goods—uncertainty with our largest trading partner is growing. In response, Canadians are mobilizing their purchasing power to support local businesses.
“What I’m seeing is a wave of Canadians coming together, backing homegrown companies, and facing these new tariffs with resilience and determination,” says Rashmi Prakash, CEO of Halifax-based startup Aruna. “I always say I’m a delusional optimist, but optimism is exactly what we need right now. What if this is an opportunity? What if it sparks greater awareness about how we spend our money, encouraging more of us to choose Canadian-made products?”.
